Where is your favorite place to read?

Snuggled beside your mom or dad, your aunt or uncle, your grandma or grandpa? Stretched out on your bed? Sprawled on the floor? Relaxed on a floppy cushion in your classroom or library? At the beach? Under a tree?

When I was little, I loved cuddling next to my grandma, (see photo above) listening to her read stories in her thick Russian accent. In the tale of “Chicken Little,” the character Ducky Lucky became the more exotic Dawky Lawky on my grandma’s tongue.

When I could read to myself, my favorite place to settle with a book was in a corner of our living room where the sun fell on the carpet in six warm squares.

In summer, I read on the front porch of my grandparents’ home, in a wooden rocking chair, the ocean breezes for company.

These days, my favorite place to read is under the covers, lamplight falling on the page.

You know, it was reading got me writing.

My favorite place to read is on the hammock under the trees on Martha’s Vineyard. Inevitably, I fall asleep and wake up with markings from the rope, but that is the joy of reading a book on a summer’s day.

In warm weather, I’m on a soft chair in my screened porch, an icy beverage nearby. In winter, I’m on the couch burrowed under a blanket, a steaming beverage close at hand. In any season, my reading companion is our goldendoodle Blossom, who lies at my feet, occasionally sighing deeply in her sleep.

In spring, reading on a bench in Washington Square Park is like a small vacation. In summer, I read on a lounge chair at the beach, my feet in the sand — perfect temperature to enjoy any novel. Fall and winter, my favorite place to read is on a couch under a down blanket by a crackling fire.

My favorite place to read is in my bed, propped up with my favorite pillows and cuddled by my covers.
I also love to read on trains and planes, and on the beach.

I like to read in bed with all my stuffed animals looking at me for guidance.

My favorite place to read is on a screened-in porch with my feet up on the railing and a mug of coffee nearby.
